Here is why high pressure is a problem worth taking seriously, and the simple device that solves it.
What Counts as Too High
Water pressure is measured in pounds per square inch, or psi. For a typical home, a healthy range generally falls somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 to 60 psi, and plumbing codes commonly flag anything above roughly 80 psi as too high and requiring correction. The trouble is that the pressure supplied by the municipal main is not tailored to your house. Utilities often keep pressure in the mains high to serve tall buildings, reach homes at higher elevations, and provide enough force for firefighting. Many homes already have one, but PRVs are mechanical devices that wear out over roughly a decade or so, and a failed regulator can let pressure creep back up without the homeowner realizing it. So the fix is either installing a PRV where none exists or replacing an old one that has failed. Do Not Forget the Expansion Tank
There is a related component worth mentioning. When a home has a PRV or other check valve, the plumbing becomes a closed system, and as the water heater heats water, that water expands with nowhere to go, causing pressure to spike. A small device called a thermal expansion tank absorbs that expansion and keeps pressure stable, protecting the water heater and the system. In many jurisdictions an expansion tank is required when a PRV is present, and pairing the two is standard good practice. A plumber will typically address both together.
